OVERVIEW
Tear Osmolarity testing is a fast diagnostic service that measures tear salt concentration to detect and grade dry eye disease. It provides objective results, supports accurate diagnosis, and helps monitor treatment response. The test is quick, gentle, and useful for both screening and follow-up.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS, INCLUSIONS, AND EXCLUSIONS
1. Service includes tear osmolarity measurement using a single-use sampling device.
2. Results support diagnosis but must be interpreted with full clinical examination.
3. Professional evaluation by the ophthalmologist is required for treatment decisions.
4. Fees may vary when bundled with other dry eye diagnostics.
5. Accuracy depends on adequate tear sample and patient cooperation.
6. Test may be deferred in active eye infection or severe irritation.
7. Treatment, medications, and procedures are not included.

TEAR OSMOLARITY TEST
Tear Osmolarity is a rapid, in-clinic diagnostic test that measures the salt concentration of your tears. It helps detect and grade dry eye disease with objective data. When the tear film becomes unstable, osmolarity rises. Therefore, this test gives your ophthalmologist a reliable marker of tear film health and ocular surface stress.
WHAT THIS SERVICE DOES
This test evaluates tear film balance by measuring osmolarity from a very small tear sample. A higher reading often indicates dry eye disease or tear film instability. In addition, differences between the two eyes may suggest uneven ocular surface stress. As a result, doctors can confirm diagnosis and tailor treatment more precisely.
Because the measurement is objective, it supports clinical findings from symptoms and slit lamp examination. Moreover, it allows better tracking of treatment response over time.
WHEN DOCTORS RECOMMEND TEAR OSMOLARITY
Your eye specialist may request tear osmolarity testing when dry eye is suspected or already diagnosed. For example, it is useful in both routine and complex cases.
1. Dry eye disease evaluation and grading
2. Pre-LASIK and refractive surgery screening
3. Cataract and premium lens workup
4. Contact lens intolerance assessment
5. Ocular surface disease monitoring
6. Follow-up after dry eye treatment
HOW THE TEST IS PERFORMED
The procedure is quick and minimally invasive. First, you look straight ahead while a small handheld device approaches the lower tear meniscus. Next, the device collects a tiny tear sample without touching the eye surface. Then, the system analyzes osmolarity within seconds. Consequently, results are available almost immediately for clinical interpretation.
No dilation or anesthesia is usually required. Most patients complete the test in just a few minutes.
PATIENT COMFORT AND SAFETY
The Tear Osmolarity test uses single-use microchips and controlled sampling. Because the collection is minimal, discomfort is rare. Most patients feel little to no sensation during testing. Furthermore, normal activities can resume right after the procedure.
WHY OBJECTIVE DRY EYE MEASUREMENT MATTERS
Dry eye symptoms alone can vary from day to day. However, osmolarity provides a measurable indicator of tear film stability. Therefore, diagnosis becomes more consistent and treatment decisions become more targeted. Objective values also help monitor improvement and guide therapy adjustments.
