OVERVIEW
YAG laser capsulotomy is a safe, outpatient laser procedure used to restore clear vision after cataract surgery when the lens capsule becomes cloudy. Months or years after a successful cataract operation, some patients develop a condition called posterior capsule opacification, where the thin membrane behind the artificial lens turns hazy. This can cause blurred vision, glare, and reduced contrast. YAG laser capsulotomy creates a precise opening in this cloudy membrane to allow light to pass through clearly again.
WHO MAY BENEFIT
This procedure is recommended for patients who have previously undergone cataract surgery and now experience decreased vision due to capsule clouding. Common symptoms include:
-
Gradually blurred or dim vision
-
Increased glare or halos around lights
-
Difficulty reading or driving at night
-
Reduced sharpness despite updated glasses
An eye examination is required to confirm that capsule opacity, and not another eye condition, is the cause of the visual symptoms.
HOW THE PROCEDURE WORKS
YAG laser capsulotomy uses a specialized, non-contact laser to create a small opening in the cloudy capsule behind the intraocular lens implant.
-
The eye is dilated and numbed with topical drops.
-
The patient sits at a laser microscope similar to a routine eye exam.
-
The laser delivers short, focused pulses to open the cloudy capsule.
-
The procedure usually takes only a few minutes per eye.
There are no surgical incisions and no stitches. Patients typically go home shortly after treatment.
EXPECTED BENEFITS
Most patients notice visual improvement within hours to days after treatment. Expected benefits may include:
-
Clearer and brighter vision
-
Reduced glare and halos
-
Improved reading and distance vision
-
Better quality of daily visual function
Results depend on the overall health of the eye and the presence of other conditions affecting the retina, optic nerve, or cornea.
SAFETY AND RISKS
YAG laser capsulotomy is widely performed and supported by long clinical experience and peer-reviewed studies. It is considered low risk, but as with any medical procedure, possible side effects can occur. These may include temporary eye pressure rise, mild inflammation, floaters, or rarely retinal complications. Preventive eye drops and follow-up checks help reduce these risks.
AFTERCARE
Patients can usually resume normal daily activities the same day unless otherwise advised. Post-procedure care may include:
-
Prescribed anti-inflammatory eye drops
-
Eye pressure check after treatment
-
Follow-up visit to monitor healing and vision
