DETAILS

PUNCTAL PLUGS – SILICONE, SEMI-PERMANENT

Silicone punctal plugs are small medical devices placed into the tear drainage openings of the eyelids. They help retain natural tears on the eye surface. As a result, they improve moisture, reduce dryness, and support better comfort. Silicone semi-permanent plugs are widely used because they are effective, reversible, and well tolerated.

WHAT THIS SERVICE TREATS

This treatment targets dry eye disease caused by poor tear retention. For example, it helps patients with evaporative dry eye, aqueous deficiency, and ocular surface irritation. In addition, it supports patients with symptoms such as burning, grittiness, redness, and fluctuating vision. Therefore, punctal plugs improve tear stability and reduce symptoms.

TYPES OF PUNCTAL PLUGS

The ophthalmologist selects the most suitable plug based on clinical findings.

1. Silicone semi-permanent plugs that remain in place long-term but can be removed if needed
2. Temporary dissolvable plugs used for short-term assessment or post-procedure support

HOW THE PROCEDURE WORKS

First, the ophthalmologist evaluates tear production and eyelid anatomy. Next, the doctor selects the correct plug size. Then, the plug is gently inserted into the punctum without the need for surgery. Because the procedure is quick and minimally invasive, most patients experience little to no discomfort. As a result, tear drainage slows, and the eye retains more moisture.

WHO MAY BENEFIT

Patients with moderate to severe dry eye may benefit from punctal plugs. In addition, individuals who do not respond well to artificial tears alone may consider this option. Furthermore, patients preparing for cataract or refractive surgery may need improved tear stability before procedures. Therefore, punctal plugs serve as an effective adjunct treatment.

RECOVERY AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES

Most patients resume normal activities immediately after the procedure. However, some may feel mild awareness of the plug during the first few days. This sensation usually resolves quickly. As a result, patients often notice improved comfort and more stable vision within days to weeks.

SAFETY AND CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Punctal plug insertion has a strong safety profile when performed by trained professionals. In addition, the ophthalmologist monitors the position and response during follow-up visits. While complications are uncommon, they may include irritation, plug displacement, or excessive tearing. Therefore, proper sizing and follow-up ensure optimal results.
