OPTICAL BIOMETRY (IOL MASTER 700)
WHAT THIS SERVICE IS
Optical biometry using the IOL Master 700 is a non-contact, high-precision eye measurement test used before cataract surgery and lens replacement procedures. It uses advanced light-based technology to measure the length and shape of the eye and the curvature of the cornea. These measurements are essential for calculating the correct power of the intraocular lens (IOL) that will be implanted during surgery.
Think of this test as creating a highly accurate “blueprint” of your eye so your surgeon can select the most suitable lens for your visual needs.
WHY THIS TEST IS IMPORTANT
Accurate measurements are critical to achieving the best possible visual outcome after cataract or lens replacement surgery. Even small measurement errors can lead to blurred vision or unexpected dependence on glasses after surgery.
This test helps your ophthalmologist:
-
Determine the correct IOL power
-
Improve refractive accuracy after surgery
-
Plan for standard, toric, or premium IOLs
-
Reduce the risk of postoperative refractive surprise
HOW THE TEST WORKS
The IOL Master 700 uses swept-source optical coherence technology to scan the eye using harmless light waves. It measures multiple structures along the visual axis, including the cornea, anterior chamber, lens, and retina.
The device captures detailed measurements within seconds. Because it is light-based and non-contact, nothing touches your eye during the scan.
WHAT YOU WILL EXPERIENCE DURING THE TEST
This is a quick and comfortable outpatient diagnostic procedure.
During the test:
-
You will sit in front of the machine and place your chin on a rest.
-
You will be asked to look at a fixation target or light.
-
Several scans will be taken to confirm accuracy.
-
Both eyes are usually measured.
The test typically takes a few minutes for both eyes combined.
SAFETY AND COMFORT
Optical biometry with the IOL Master 700 is safe and painless. It does not use radiation and does not require direct contact with the eye. Most patients do not need anesthesia or dilating drops specifically for this measurement, unless combined with other tests.
There is no recovery time, and you may resume normal activities immediately after the procedure.
LIMITATIONS
In some cases, such as very dense cataracts or severe media opacity, optical signals may be reduced. If measurements cannot be reliably obtained, your ophthalmologist may recommend an alternative ultrasound-based measurement method.
PROFESSIONAL AND LEGAL NOTE
This diagnostic service is performed as part of standard preoperative evaluation and surgical planning. Results are interpreted by a licensed ophthalmologist and used together with clinical examination and other diagnostic findings to guide appropriate treatment recommendations.
