WHAT IS FEMTOLASIK

FemtoLASIK is a laser vision correction procedure used to reduce or eliminate dependence on eyeglasses or contact lenses. It treats refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. It uses two lasers: a femtosecond laser to create a thin corneal flap and an excimer laser to reshape the cornea for clearer vision. No blade is used to create the flap.

WHO MAY BENEFIT

FemtoLASIK may be considered if you:

1. Are at least 18 years old

2. Have stable eyeglass or contact lens prescription

3. Have healthy corneas of adequate thickness

4. Do not have active eye disease or infection

5. Are not pregnant or breastfeeding

6. Do not have uncontrolled systemic disease affecting healing

A full eye examination, including cycloplegic refraction and a recent dilated fundus examination, is required before approval for surgery.

HOW THE PROCEDURE IS DONE

FemtoLASIK is usually completed in one visit and takes only a few minutes per eye.

Steps include:

1. Numbing eye drops are applied.

2. A femtosecond laser creates a thin corneal flap.

3. The flap is gently lifted.

4. An excimer laser reshapes the cornea based on your measurements.

5. The flap is repositioned without stitches.

You remain awake during the procedure.

EXPECTED BENEFITS

Most qualified patients experience:

1. Improved unaided distance vision

2. Rapid visual recovery, often within 24–48 hours

3. Reduced dependence on glasses or contact lenses

Perfect vision is not guaranteed. Some patients may still need glasses for certain tasks, especially reading with age.

POSSIBLE RISKS AND SIDE EFFECTS

All surgical procedures carry risk. Possible side effects and complications include:

1. Dry eyes

2. Glare, halos, or starbursts at night

3. Under-correction or over-correction

4. Need for enhancement surgery

5. Infection or inflammation

6. Flap-related complications

7. Irregular astigmatism or corneal ectasia (rare)

8. Loss of best corrected vision (rare)

Most side effects improve with time and treatment, but some may be long-term.

ALTERNATIVES

Alternatives include:

1. Continued use of glasses or contact lenses

2. Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK)

3. SMILE laser vision correction

4. Implantable contact lens (ICL)

5. Refractive lens exchange

Your surgeon will discuss which options are suitable for your condition.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE

You must follow all post-operative instructions carefully.

Typical guidance includes:

1. Use prescribed eye drops as directed

2. Do not rub your eyes

3. Avoid swimming and hot saunas until cleared

4. Attend all scheduled follow-up visits

5. Use protective shields if advised

Temporary fluctuation of vision is common during early healing.
