DESCRIPTION
KeraRing Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segment (ICRS) implantation is a minimally invasive corneal procedure designed to improve vision in patients with keratoconus and other corneal shape irregularities. Keratoconus causes the cornea to become thin and cone-shaped, leading to blurred, distorted vision and increased light sensitivity. KeraRing segments are tiny, clear, arc-shaped implants placed within the cornea to help regularize its shape and improve visual quality.
This service is offered as a medically guided, evidence-based treatment option for selected patients who meet clinical criteria after full diagnostic testing and specialist evaluation.
HOW THE PROCEDURE WORKS
KeraRing segments act like internal support beams for the cornea. By inserting these micro-thin rings into a precise corneal channel, the corneal curvature is redistributed and partially flattened. This may reduce irregular astigmatism and improve how light focuses inside the eye.
Channel creation is typically performed using a femtosecond laser for high precision and safety. The ring segments are then inserted through a small corneal opening. The procedure is usually done under local anesthesia and on an outpatient basis.
WHO MAY BENEFIT
KeraRing ICRS implantation may be recommended for patients with:
-
Keratoconus or corneal ectasia
-
Irregular astigmatism with reduced best corrected vision
-
Contact lens intolerance
-
Clear central cornea without advanced scarring
-
Corneal thickness within safety limits
Final suitability is determined only after comprehensive corneal mapping, imaging, and clinical examination.
EXPECTED BENEFITS
Potential benefits may include:
-
Improved corneal shape regularity
-
Better uncorrected and corrected visual acuity
-
Reduced dependence on contact lenses in some cases
-
Improved tolerance to glasses or contact lenses
-
Possible delay or avoidance of corneal transplantation in selected patients
Results vary per patient and may require additional treatments such as corneal collagen cross-linking for long-term stability.
LIMITATIONS AND RISKS
KeraRing implantation does not cure keratoconus and does not restore the cornea to a perfectly normal state. Visual outcomes differ depending on disease severity and corneal structure.
As with any surgical procedure, potential risks include infection, inflammation, glare, halos, undercorrection, overcorrection, segment movement, extrusion, or need for repositioning or removal. Additional procedures may be required in some cases.
SAFETY AND EVIDENCE BASIS
ICRS implantation is supported by peer-reviewed clinical studies and international ophthalmology guidelines as a recognized treatment option for selected keratoconus and ectasia patients. Modern laser-assisted techniques improve placement accuracy and safety.
A full diagnostic workup and individualized treatment plan are required before proceeding.
IMPORTANT NOTE
This product/service description is for patient education and catalog information only. Final recommendations, outcomes, and treatment plans depend on detailed clinical evaluation by a qualified ophthalmologist.
