OVERVIEW
Incision and curettage is a minor, evidence-based surgical procedure commonly performed to treat eyelid lumps such as chalazion or persistent stye. It involves making a small, controlled opening in the lesion and gently removing the inflamed or blocked material. This service is routinely done in ophthalmology clinics and is supported by standard clinical practice guidelines for cases that do not respond to warm compresses and medications.
WHEN THIS PROCEDURE IS RECOMMENDED
Incision and curettage may be advised when one or more of the following are present:
-
A persistent eyelid lump lasting several weeks to months
-
Failure to improve with warm compresses and prescribed drops or ointments
-
Recurrent swelling in the same area
-
Blurred vision or pressure sensation due to the size of the lesion
-
Suspicion of a non-resolving meibomian gland blockage requiring tissue removal
WHAT THE PROCEDURE INVOLVES
The procedure is usually performed in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia. The eyelid is cleaned and numbed to keep the patient comfortable. A small clamp may be placed to stabilize the eyelid. A tiny incision is created on the inner or outer eyelid surface, depending on the case. The contents of the lump are carefully removed using a curette. The procedure typically takes only a few minutes. Stitches are rarely needed.
EXPECTED BENEFITS
The goals of incision and curettage include:
-
Removal of the blocked and inflamed material
-
Faster resolution of the eyelid lump
-
Relief of discomfort and swelling
-
Reduced risk of recurrence compared with observation alone in selected cases
-
Restoration of normal eyelid contour and function
POSSIBLE RISKS AND LIMITATIONS
Although generally safe, all minor surgical procedures carry some risk. These may include temporary bleeding, bruising, swelling, mild pain, infection, scarring, or recurrence of the lesion. Some patients may still require additional medical treatment after the procedure. Very rarely, a biopsy may be recommended if the lesion appears atypical.
RECOVERY AND AFTERCARE
Most patients return to normal activities within one to two days. Mild swelling or bruising can occur and usually improves quickly. Aftercare commonly includes:
-
Prescribed antibiotic or anti-inflammatory eye medication
-
Warm compresses as instructed
-
Avoiding eye rubbing and makeup for several days
-
Follow-up visit if advised
IMPORTANT NOTES
This service is provided after proper eye examination and diagnosis by a licensed ophthalmologist. Individual suitability, expected outcomes, and recovery time vary per patient. Early consultation improves treatment success and helps rule out more serious eyelid conditions.
