OVERVIEW
Aflibercept (EYLEA) Anti-VEGF Intravitreal Injection is a targeted eye treatment used to control abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage inside the retina. Doctors inject this medication directly into the vitreous cavity of the eye using sterile technique. As a result, the drug reaches the retina at an effective dose. This treatment helps stabilize vision and, in many cases, improves visual clarity in patients with specific retinal diseases.
HOW IT WORKS
Aflibercept blocks vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a signal protein that causes weak, leaky, and abnormal blood vessels to grow in the retina. When VEGF activity decreases, fluid leakage and swelling are reduced. Therefore, the retina becomes more stable. In turn, this supports better visual function and lowers the risk of further damage.
COMMON INDICATIONS
Your ophthalmologist may recommend Aflibercept injection for the following conditions:
1. Wet age-related macular degeneration
2. Diabetic macular edema
3. Macular edema after retinal vein occlusion
4. Diabetic retinopathy with retinal swelling
HOW THE PROCEDURE IS DONE
The procedure takes only a few minutes and is performed in a controlled clinical setting. First, the eye is cleaned and numbed with anesthetic drops. Next, antiseptic is applied to reduce infection risk. Then the medication is injected using a very fine needle. Most patients feel pressure rather than pain. Afterward, you can usually go home the same day. However, you must follow all post-treatment instructions carefully.
TREATMENT SCHEDULE
Treatment usually starts with a series of monthly injections. After that, the interval may be extended depending on your response. Your doctor adjusts the schedule based on retinal scans and vision results. Therefore, regular follow-up visits are essential for safe and effective care.
EXPECTED BENEFITS
With timely treatment, many patients experience reduced retinal swelling and slower disease progression. In addition, a significant number gain measurable vision improvement. However, results vary per patient, and early treatment often leads to better outcomes.
POSSIBLE RISKS AND SIDE EFFECTS
All intravitreal injections carry some risk. Although complications are uncommon, they can occur. These include:
– Eye redness or irritation
– Temporary blurred vision
– Increased eye pressure
– Infection or inflammation inside the eye
– Retinal tear or detachment
You should report severe pain, worsening vision, or increasing redness immediately.
WHO SHOULD NOT RECEIVE THIS TREATMENT
This injection is not given if there is an active eye infection or severe ocular inflammation. In addition, patients with known allergy to Aflibercept or its components should not receive the drug. Your doctor will review your medical and eye history before treatment.
IMPORTANT PATIENT GUIDANCE
This product description provides general educational information only. It does not replace a full medical consultation. A licensed ophthalmologist must evaluate your condition, explain alternatives, and design your personalized treatment plan. Consistent monitoring and timely injections are key to protecting your vision.
