CORNEAL TOPOGRAPHY
OVERVIEW
Corneal topography is a non-invasive imaging test that creates a detailed map of the shape and curvature of the front surface of the eye, called the cornea. It works like a “geographic map” of your cornea, showing high and low areas, curves, and symmetry. This test helps your eye doctor evaluate how well your cornea can focus light and whether its shape is normal or irregular. It is commonly used for screening, diagnosis, and treatment planning in many eye conditions and vision correction procedures.
WHAT THE TEST MEASURES
Corneal topography analyzes the surface contour and optical power of the cornea. It provides precise measurements of:
-
Corneal curvature and steepness
-
Regular and irregular astigmatism
-
Corneal symmetry between different areas
-
Surface patterns suggestive of corneal disease
-
Changes in corneal shape over time
These measurements are supported by established ophthalmic imaging principles and are widely used in evidence-based clinical practice.
WHO MAY BENEFIT FROM CORNEAL TOPOGRAPHY
Your eye doctor may recommend corneal topography if you have or are being evaluated for:
-
Blurred or distorted vision not fully explained by glasses
-
Astigmatism
-
Keratoconus or other corneal thinning disorders
-
Contact lens fitting, especially specialty lenses
-
Laser vision correction screening and follow-up
-
Cataract or refractive surgery planning
-
Monitoring after corneal procedures
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE TEST
Corneal topography is quick, painless, and does not involve touching the eye. No injections or surgical instruments are used.
-
You will sit in front of the imaging device and place your chin and forehead on a support.
-
You will be asked to look at a fixed target light.
-
The machine captures images within seconds.
-
Both eyes are usually tested.
The procedure typically takes only a few minutes. In most cases, no recovery time is needed and you can resume normal activities right away.
SAFETY AND LIMITATIONS
Corneal topography is considered safe and low risk. Because it is an optical scan, image quality depends on proper positioning, steady fixation, and a clear corneal surface. Excessive tearing, severe dryness, active infection, or poor cooperation may affect accuracy. In some cases, repeat scans may be required for confirmation.
IMPORTANT NOTES
Corneal topography is a diagnostic imaging service and not a treatment by itself. Results must be interpreted by a qualified eye physician in the context of a full eye examination. Findings may guide further testing, monitoring, or treatment recommendations. This service supports medically sound, evidence-based decision-making in modern ophthalmic care.
