The Brightness Acuity Test is a specialized eye examination that measures how well you see when exposed to bright light or glare. Although many people read an eye chart clearly in a dim or controlled room, real-world vision often happens under harsh lighting. Therefore, this test helps your eye doctor understand how glare affects your functional vision.

BRIGHTNESS ACUITY TEST
WHAT IS THE BRIGHTNESS ACUITY TEST
The Brightness Acuity Test is a specialized eye examination that measures how well you see when exposed to bright light or glare. Although many people read an eye chart clearly in a dim or controlled room, real-world vision often happens under harsh lighting. Therefore, this test helps your eye doctor understand how glare affects your functional vision.
For example, some patients see well indoors but struggle when driving under midday sun or facing oncoming headlights at night. In these cases, the Brightness Acuity Test provides additional, practical information beyond a standard visual acuity test.
WHY THIS TEST IS IMPORTANT
This test helps detect vision problems that become noticeable only under bright conditions. In particular, it supports the evaluation of cataracts, corneal irregularities, and certain retinal conditions. Moreover, it helps explain why some patients report poor visual quality despite “normal” chart results.
As a result, your doctor can make more accurate and individualized treatment recommendations. These may include updated glasses, medical treatment, or consideration of surgery when appropriate.
HOW THE TEST IS PERFORMED
The Brightness Acuity Test is quick, safe, and noninvasive. First, you look at a standard vision chart. Then, a controlled bright light source is introduced to simulate glare. After that, you read the chart again under different brightness levels.
Your responses are recorded and compared. Because the light levels change in a controlled way, the test can measure how much glare reduces your visual performance.
WHO MAY NEED A BRIGHTNESS ACUITY TEST
Your eye doctor may recommend this test if you have symptoms or findings such as:
1. Difficulty seeing in bright sunlight
2. Problems with night driving due to glare
3. Suspected or known cataract
4. Complaints of hazy or washed-out vision
5. Vision complaints not fully explained by routine testing
WHAT THE RESULTS MEAN
If your vision drops significantly under bright light, glare sensitivity likely affects your daily visual function. Consequently, your doctor may correlate these findings with your eye examination and imaging results. This combined approach supports evidence-based clinical decisions.
However, test results do not stand alone. Instead, your doctor interprets them together with your history, symptoms, and full eye exam.
SAFETY AND PATIENT GUIDANCE
The Brightness Acuity Test uses safe, medically approved light levels. Most patients tolerate the test well. Nevertheless, you may feel temporary discomfort from brightness, similar to stepping outdoors on a sunny day. This sensation fades quickly after the test.
Overall, the Brightness Acuity Test adds valuable, real-world insight into your visual quality. Therefore, it helps guide accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment planning.
