B-SCAN ULTRASOUND
WHAT IS A B-SCAN ULTRASOUND
B-Scan Ultrasound is a safe, noninvasive eye imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create a two-dimensional picture of the inside of the eye and the tissues behind it. It is especially useful when the doctor cannot clearly see the back of the eye using regular examination methods, such as when a dense cataract, corneal opacity, or vitreous hemorrhage blocks the view.
The test helps evaluate the retina, vitreous, optic nerve area, and eye wall structure. It is widely used in modern ophthalmology and is supported by established clinical practice guidelines.
WHY A B-SCAN ULTRASOUND IS DONE
Your eye doctor may request a B-Scan Ultrasound to help detect or monitor conditions such as:
-
Retinal detachment or retinal tears
-
Vitreous hemorrhage or dense floaters
-
Intraocular tumors or masses
-
Posterior vitreous detachment
-
Eye trauma or suspected foreign body
-
Structural causes of unexplained vision loss
-
Eye conditions where direct visualization is not possible
This test provides important diagnostic information that supports accurate and timely treatment planning.
HOW THE PROCEDURE IS PERFORMED
B-Scan Ultrasound is done in the clinic and usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes per eye.
Numbing eye drops may be applied for comfort. A small amount of clear gel is placed on the closed eyelid or on the surface of the eye, depending on the technique used. A handheld ultrasound probe is gently moved over the eyelid or eye surface to capture images.
You may be asked to look in different directions during the scan so that all areas inside the eye can be evaluated. The machine converts sound wave echoes into real-time images displayed on a monitor.
The procedure is painless for most patients and does not involve radiation.
SAFETY AND COMFORT
B-Scan Ultrasound has an excellent safety record. It uses sound waves, not x-rays or lasers. It is considered low risk and is routinely performed in children, adults, elderly patients, and those with complex eye disease.
Mild temporary blur from gel or drops may occur but usually clears quickly. Serious complications are extremely rare.
PREPARATION AND AFTERCARE
No special preparation is usually required. You may eat, drink, and take your regular medications unless your doctor gives different instructions.
After the test, you can typically return to normal activities right away. If dilating or numbing drops were used, your vision may be temporarily blurred, and you may be advised to avoid driving until vision clears.
CLINICAL VALUE
B-Scan Ultrasound is an evidence-based diagnostic tool that plays a critical role when direct examination of the back of the eye is limited. It helps your ophthalmologist make accurate decisions about diagnosis, urgency, and treatment options, improving overall patient care and safety.
