Posterior segment photography is a non-contact imaging service that captures high-quality photographs of the retina, optic nerve, and surrounding structures at the back of the eye. This test documents eye health in a clear and objective way. As a result, it helps your ophthalmologist detect disease, monitor changes over time, and guide clinical decisions with greater accuracy.
WHAT THIS SERVICE DOES
This imaging test records detailed color images of the posterior segment of the eye. It shows the optic disc, macula, retinal blood vessels, and surrounding retina. Therefore, it allows early identification of abnormalities that may not cause symptoms at first. In addition, it provides a permanent visual record for comparison during follow-up visits.
WHEN POSTERIOR SEGMENT PHOTOGRAPHY IS RECOMMENDED

HOW THE IMAGING IS PERFORMED
The procedure is quick and non-invasive. First, you sit in front of the camera and rest your chin on a support. Next, you look at a fixation target while the camera captures images of the back of the eye. In some cases, pupil dilation may be required to improve image quality. Consequently, the entire process usually takes only a few minutes.
PATIENT EXPERIENCE AND SAFETY
Posterior segment photography does not involve injections or contact with the eye. Because of this, discomfort is minimal. If dilation drops are used, temporary light sensitivity and blurred near vision may occur. However, these effects wear off within a few hours. Overall, the test is safe and well tolerated.
